August 1939

Commanding Officer: Lt Col TG Watson

Place Date Hour Summary of Events and Information References to Appendices
25 Aug 39   At 11.00am on 3 September 1939 Britain declared war on Germany . The Regiment, which had been stationed in Egypt since December 1933, left for Mersa Matruh on 25 August. Spending the night 25/26 August at El Alamein , the Regiment reached Mersa Matruh in the early afternoon of 26 August.
The effective strength on leaving barracks was sixteen officers and 379 other ranks, which included attached personnel (one medical officer, nine LAD, two armourers and twelve Y Troop Egypt Signals). The Regiment was then composed of Regimental Headquarters, two car squadrons (B and C) and one light tank squadron (A).
The tanks of A Squadron had made the journey to Matruh by rail, whilst the wheeled transport of this squadron had accompanied the Regiment by road. The bivouac area chosen for the Regiment was approximately two miles south-west of the Sidi Barrani - Siwa road junction ( CHARING CROSS ).
It was in this area also that the remaining units of the Light Armoured Brigade (LAB), which consisted of 7th and 11th Hussars and D and J Batteries RHA, were also bivouacked. Mersa Matruh, a seaside town approximately 200 miles West of Alexandria, was well known to the 8th Hussars. Not only had they been on manoeuvres many times in that area, but also, since the winter of 1935, they had been sent there at short notice when the situation in Libya demanded attention.
Since September 1938 the Regiment had been sent to this area three times. The Regiment at this time was commanded by Lt Col T G Watson, who had succeeded to command of the Regiment in October 1938, vice Lt Col F Thornton, who had taken up employment as GSO1 7th Division in Palestine, subsequently becoming Brigade Commander to 2 Cavalry Brigade at Tidworth.

On our arrival at Matruh on 26 August 1939, the European situation was very indefinite. There was, however, always a threat of war and, in consequence, it was essential to take all necessary precautions against attack by Italy who, as an Axis power, was likely to come in on the side of Germany . All vehicles were spread out to a distance of 100yds and the area covered by the Regiment must have been one square mile.

Vehicles were parked in twos and, during our first days in camp, time was spent in siting and digging slit trenches, a precaution against air attack. As the ground in our area was 75% solid rock, digging to the required depth was exhausting work, and it was not until five days concentrated digging that each man had a trench of sufficient depth to take cover. At this period each officer and man had to carry gasmasks and wear eyeshields.
Shortage of fresh water put any question of a bath out of the question (2galls of water per man per day was the ration). The bathing (sea), however, at Mersa Matruh is second to none and bathing parties were conveyed in lorries and pick-ups daily to the harbour, a distance of 20kms.
It seemed hard to realise, whilst bathing in the crystal-clear sea with a cloudless sky above, that war clouds threatened, and anything more incongruous than a gasmask and a pair of eyeshields under such conditions is hard to imagine.
News was always difficult to obtain. Day-old papers from Cairo and week-old papers from England was the news we lived on. A few days after our arrival, however, Armoured Division started a daily news sheet ‘The Gerawka Gossip’ (subsequently the ‘Bagusg Bugle’) which kept us more in the picture and put an end to some of the vivid rumours that are always rife at a period such as this. After war had started we made use of our No 11 Sets, and we were able to hear the evening news from England .

The medical and sanitary arrangements in a camp of this description always present a difficulty. In our previous visits to Matruh our camp had always been adjacent to the sea and town, where native labour was always easy to obtain. Therefore the removal of refuse, excreta etc was a comparatively  matter. With a camp20kms from the sea, this matter presented a different aspect.

Native labour was hard to obtain and the burial of rubbish in rock a physical impossibility. Squadrons set to work to overcome this difficulty and, after a very short time, under the untiring supervision of our medical officer, Capt Dansey-Browning, our system of hygiene proved very satisfactory.

The tentage issued was limited (one store tent and two ridge tents per squadron). Bivouac tents were issued before the Regiment left Cairo, but for the most part the men preferred to sleeping the open, the nights being pleasantly warm. The biggest danger to sleeping in the open was the presence of scorpions, snakes and poisonous spiders. Bites from these various reptiles were frequent, but the wounds were always capably dealt with by the medical officer.

Five days after our arrival at Matruh, troop training was begun. Squadron leaders, who had found it hard to obtain ‘two men and a boy’ for training whilst in barracks, now found themselves with full crews, with officers and TSMs commanding troops instead of junior lance-corporals.

3 Sep 39   Such was the position when, on 3 September 1939, we heard that Great Britain had declared war on Germany. The distribution of the Regiment at this period was as follows

I know well that you realise what is at stake and that, in the struggle which lies ahead, every man in my Armies will play his part with gallantry and devotion. It is my earnest prayer that God will have you in his keeping and grant success to your arms.      George RI’.

‘The Secretary of State for War, with his humble duty, has the honour to inform Your Majesty that he has today conveyed to the British Army Your Majesty’s most inspiring message, and humbly begs to be permitted, on the behalf of every soldier, whatever his rank, to submit the Army’s respectful thanks, together with their loyal assurance that, sustained and fortified by the knowledge that they are fighting in the most sacred of all causes under Your Majesty’s gracious leadership, they will endeavour, both by devoted service and, if needs be by sacrifice, to maintain the glorious record and tradition of those who have gone before them.    Leslie Hore-Belisha’

November 1939

Commanding Officer: Lt Col TG Watson

Place Date Hour Summary of Events and Information References to Appendices
3 Nov 39   Last BTE exercise started.
6 Nov 39 0900 hrs . Final conference held by GOCinC at Shafto’s Cinema, Matruh.
9 Nov 39   Seething sandstorm all morning and afternoon.
10 Nov 39   The heaviest downpour of all times, coupled with a fierce gale. A large proportion of tentage blown down. Only those lucky enough to have a bed to sleep on escaped being soaked to the skin. The country between the camp and the Sidi Barrani road became a quagmire and it was almost impossible for any vehicle on wheels to make the road.
The tanks did invaluable work in salvaging vehicles that had become stuck. Approximately 100 men were evacuated to Matruh for the night, where the Brigadier had arranged a house and dry blankets to be at their disposal. Difficulty was experienced in obtaining the rations, as the RASC vehicles stuck in the mud on leaving the road. In all cases the situation was saved by the tanks.
The 7th Hussars gave us great assistance in loaning lorries to convey the soaked personnel to Matruh. They sent the lorries to the 19Km post and picked up our dismounted men, who had been sent on foot from camp to the road.
11 Nov 39   The Brigadier called at camp at 0915hrs and took the Colonel, Adjutant and RQMS to see the new site which had been chosen. The move was to take place at the first available opportunity. Squadron leaders’ conference called on return of above party to camp and move initiated at approximately 1100hrs.
Approximately half the camp had been moved to the new site by nightfall. The new site lay between 13 and 14Km posts on the Matruh road. Ground still sopping wet and all movement of vehicles severely hampered by the going.
12 Nov 39   Move to the new site completed. The whole day was spent settling into camp.
13 Nov 39   First definite news of move of Regiment back to Cairo .
18 Nov 39 1230 hrs Officers and NCOs interviewed by Brigadier.
26 Nov 39 0800 hrs Regimental party left for Siwa.
28 Nov 39 1830 hrs Siwa party returned.
29 Nov 39 0730 hrs Advanced party left for Helmieh. Tentage struck and trucks loaded.
30 Nov 39 0630 hrs Lt Comyn left for Cairo with five pick-ups and seventeen ORs. Remaining tentage struck and trucks loaded.
